저번에는 안동의 대표사원인 도산서원을 둘러봤고 이번에는 병산서원을 알아봅니다. 병산서원(屛山書院)은 경상북도 안동시에 위치한 조선 시대의 대표적인 서원 중 하나로, 유교 교육과 선비 정신을 상징하는 아주 특별한 곳이에요. 특히 낙동강과 병산(屛山, 병풍처럼 둘러싼 산)의 절경이 어우러져, 서원의 건축미와 자연이 완벽하게 조화를 이루는 곳으로 유명합니다.
Last time, we toured Dosan Seowon, the representative temple of Andong, and this time we will learn about Byeongsan Seowon. Byeongsan Seowon (屛山書院) is one of the representative Seowons of the Joseon Dynasty located in Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It is a very special place that symbolizes Confucian education and the spirit of scholars. It is especially famous for the perfect harmony of the architectural beauty of the Seowon and nature, with the beautiful scenery of the Nakdonggang River and Byeongsan (屛山, a mountain surrounding like a folding screen).
이 서원은 서애 류성룡(柳成龍, 1542~1607) 선생의 학문과 덕행을 기리기 위해 세워졌는데요, 류성룡은 임진왜란 당시 나라를 구한 명재상이자, <징비록>을 쓴 인물로도 잘 알려져 있죠.
This Seowon was built to honor the scholarship and virtue of Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong (柳成龍, 1542~1607). Ryu Seong-ryong was a famous minister who saved the country during the Imjin War and is also well known as the author of <Jingbirok>.
🏛 병산서원의 역사 History of Byeongsan Seowon
● 초기 이름: 풍악서당 (1572년, 류성룡이 후학을 양성하기 위해 세운 교육기관)
● Initial name: Pungak Seodang (1572, educational institution established by Ryu Seong-ryong to nurture his students)
● 서원으로 승격: 1613년, 류성룡 사후에 제자들과 유림들이 서원을 세우고 ‘병산서원’이라 이름 지음
● Promotion to Seowon: After Ryu Seong-ryong’s death in 1613, his disciples and Confucian scholars established a Seowon and named it ‘Byeongsan Seowon’
● 사액서원 지정: 1863년, 철종 때 사액서원이 되어 ‘병산서원’이라는 현판을 하사받음
● Designation as a royal Seowon: In 1863, during the reign of King Cheoljong, it became a royal Seowon and was granted a signboard reading ‘Byeongsan Seowon’
병산서원은 흥선대원군의 서원 철폐령에도 살아남은 몇 안 되는 서원 중 하나예요. 그만큼 학문적, 문화적 가치가 높다고 인정받은 것이죠.
Byeongsan Seowon is one of the few Seowons that survived the abolition of Seowon by Heungseon Daewongun. It is recognized for its high academic and cultural value.
🏯 병산서원의 건축미와 배치 The architectural beauty and layout of Byeongsan Seowon
병산서원에 들어서면 먼저 눈에 띄는 건 '만대루(晩對樓)'라는 누각이에요. 이곳에 올라서면 낙동강과 병산이 한눈에 들어오는데, 정말 그림 같은 풍경이라 숨이 탁 트이는 느낌이에요.
When you enter Byeongsan Seowon, the first thing that catches your eye is the pavilion called 'Mandaeru (晩對樓)'. When you climb up here, you can see the Nakdong River and Byeongsan at a glance, and it is a truly picturesque view that makes you feel like your breath is being taken away.

● Mandeoru: A pavilion in front of the Seowon, where scholars contemplated while looking out over the river and mountains

서원의 구조는 자연 지형을 최대한 살려서 지어졌는데, 산세와 강줄기가 서원을 감싸듯 자리 잡아, 조선 시대 선비들이 추구하던 자연 속 배움의 이상향을 그대로 보여줘요.
The structure of the Seowon was built to make the most of the natural terrain, with the mountains and rivers surrounding the Seowon, showing the ideal of learning in nature that scholars of the Joseon Dynasty pursued.
📚 류성룡의 학문과 정신 Ryu Seong-ryong's studies and spirit
류성룡 선생은 실천적 유학자였어요. 이론에만 그치지 않고 실제 정치와 외교에 학문을 적용해 나라를 구하려 했죠. 임진왜란 때 이순신을 천거하고, 훈련도감을 설치해 조선의 군사 개혁을 이끌었던 것도 류성룡의 공이에요.
Ryu Seong-ryong was a practical Confucian scholar. He did not stop at theory, but tried to save the country by applying his studies to actual politics and diplomacy. It is Ryu Seong-ryong's contribution that he recommended Yi Sun-sin during the Imjin War and established the Military Training Office to lead the military reform of Joseon.
그의 대표 저서인 <징비록(懲毖錄)>은 임진왜란의 경험을 바탕으로 후세에 경계하라는 교훈을 남긴 책이에요. 이처럼 나라와 백성을 위하는 선비 정신이 병산서원의 교육 철학에도 깃들어 있답니다.
His representative work, <Jingbirok (懲毖錄)>, is a book that left a lesson for future generations to be on guard based on the experience of the Imjin War. The spirit of a scholar who serves the country and the people is also embedded in the educational philosophy of Byeongsan Seowon.
🌍 세계문화유산과 문화적 가치 World Cultural Heritage and Cultural Value
병산서원도 2019년에 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정된 ‘한국의 서원’ 9곳 중 하나예요. 학문 탐구의 공간이면서, 자연과 인간의 조화를 추구한 건축 철학, 그리고 후학 양성을 위한 교육 정신까지 — 병산서원은 조선 시대 선비 문화의 정수를 보여주는 곳이죠.
Byeongsan Seowon is also one of the nine ‘Korean Seowon’ designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 2019. As a space for academic exploration, it is a place that shows the essence of the scholar culture of the Joseon Dynasty, with its architectural philosophy that pursues harmony between nature and humans, and its educational spirit for

그럼요! 지금도 병산서원은 일반인들에게 개방되어 있어서, 언제든 방문할 수 있어요. 특히 가을 단풍철에 가면 낙동강과 병산의 풍경이 정말 황홀해요. 만대루에 앉아 강바람을 맞으며 사색에 잠겨보는 것도 좋은 경험이 될 거예요.
Of course! Byeongsan Seowon is still open to the public, so you can visit anytime. Especially during the fall foliage season, the scenery of Nakdonggang River and Byeongsan is truly enchanting. It would also be a good experience to sit on Mandeoru and feel the river breeze and immerse yourself in thought.
