선재도 바지락 페스티벌, 갯벌에서 바지락과 함께한 인천 가족여행 Seonjaedo Clam Festival: An Incheon Family Trip Digging for Clams on the Tidal Flats

바지락을 직접 캐러 간다고?”

처음에는 가볍게 생각했습니다. 그런데 막상 선재도 바지락 페스티벌 현장에 도착해 보니 생각보다 훨씬 많은 사람들이 모여 있었습니다.

특히 눈에 많이 띈 것은 아이들과 함께 온 가족 나들이객들입니다. 갯벌체험을 기다리는 아이들의 표정부터 신나 보였고, 어른들도 어느새 호미 하나 들고 바지락 찾기에 진심이 되어 있었습니다.

결국 저도 시간 가는 줄 모르고 갯벌을 뒤적이게 됐습니다.

 

1. 제1회 선재도 바지락 페스티벌

이번에 열린 행사는 ‘제1회 선재도 바지樂 페스티벌’입니다.

2026년 9월 19일 토요일 낮 12시부터 오후 7시까지 선재도 관광안내소와 공영주차장 일원에서 처음 열린 축제입니다.

선재도의 대표 특산물인 바지락과 갯벌을 관광 콘텐츠로 만들어 바지락 캐기와 바지락 담기 체험, 어촌계 직거래 판매, 바지락 먹거리, 공연과 주민 참여 프로그램 등을 함께 진행했습니다.

말 그대로

바다 보고 → 갯벌 걷고 → 바지락 캐고 → 먹거리 즐기고 → 공연까지 보는

선재도만의 가을 축제입니다.

 

 

 

2. 아이들과 함께 온 가족 나들이객이 정말 많았습니다

 

현장에 도착해서 가장 먼저 눈에 들어온 것은 가족 단위 방문객이었습니다.

아이 손을 잡고 온 부모님들이 정말 많았습니다.

갯벌체험을 기다리는 아이들은 벌써부터 들떠 있고, 어른들은 장화와 장갑을 챙기느라 분주합니다.

처음에는 아이들이 좋아하는 체험이겠거니 했는데, 막상 시작하니 어른들도 만만치 않습니다.

“저쪽이 더 잘 나온다더라.”

이런 이야기가 들리기 시작하면서 어른들도 본격적으로 바지락 찾기에 나섭니다.

 

3. 트랙터를 타고 물 빠진 갯벌로 들어갑니다

 

이번 체험에서 의외로 재미있었던 것이 바로 트랙터입니다.

갯벌이 있는 곳까지 걸어가는 것이 아니라 트랙터를 타고 이동합니다.

체험객을 태운 트랙터가 수시로 오가면서 사람들이 조개를 캐는 갯벌까지 데려다줍니다.

트랙터에 올라타니 잠깐이지만 놀이기구를 타는 것 같은 기분도 듭니다.

무엇보다 물이 빠진 넓은 갯벌을 향해 트랙터를 타고 들어가는 모습 자체가 평소 여행에서는 쉽게 경험하기 어려운 장면입니다.

카메라를 들고 있다면 이 장면도 꼭 담아볼 만합니다.

 

 

4. 체험비는 1인 12,000원, 장화는 2,000원

이번에 제가 체험한 비용은 1인 12,000원이었습니다.

체험에 필요한 호미와 장갑, 작은 조개통을 준비하고 갯벌로 들어갑니다.

장화가 없다면 2,000원을 내고 빌릴 수 있습니다.

예전 선재도 갯벌체험 안내에서도 입장료와 별도로 장화 대여가 운영된 사례가 확인됩니다.

갯벌에 들어가야 하기 때문에 장화는 사실상 필수라고 생각하면 편합니다.

옷도 너무 좋은 옷보다는 흙이 묻어도 괜찮은 복장이 좋겠습니다.

 

 

5. 같은 갯벌인데 위치에 따라 나오는 조개가 다릅니다

이게 또 재미있었습니다.

무조건 아무 곳이나 파면 같은 조개가 나오는 것이 아니었습니다.

위치에 따라 나오는 조개가 조금씩 달랐습니다.

제가 체험하면서 만난 조개는 동죽과 바지락입니다.

호미로 갯벌을 살살 긁어보면서 조개가 나오면 바로 통에 넣습니다.

처음에는 한두 개 나오면 신기해서 사진부터 찍습니다.

그런데 몇 개씩 나오기 시작하면 상황이 달라집니다.

사진은 나중이고 일단 캐게 됩니다.

이건 남이 캔 동죽

 

 

6. 아이도 어른도 갯벌에서는 똑같아집니다

아이들이 열심히 조개를 캐는 모습이 정말 귀엽습니다.

그런데 가만히 보고 있으면 어른들도 아이들과 별반 다르지 않습니다.

조개 하나 발견하면

“여기 있다!”

하면서 좋아합니다.

조금 더 많이 나오면 옆 사람에게 알려주기도 하고, 어느 순간부터는 누가 더 많이 캤는지 은근히 경쟁까지 시작됩니다.

평소라면 갯벌에 들어갈 일이 별로 없는데, 호미 하나 들고 갯벌에 앉아 있으니 어린 시절로 돌아간 듯한 기분도 듭니다.

 

 

7. 바지락 하나 찾는 재미에 시간이 훌쩍 갑니다

처음에는 “한 시간 정도면 충분하겠지” 했습니다.

그런데 막상 갯벌에 들어가니 생각이 완전히 달라집니다.

조금만 파면 조개가 나오고, 옆으로 몇 걸음 이동하면 또 나오고.

‘조금만 더 캐고 가야지.’

하다 보니 계속하게 됩니다.

아이들도 마찬가지입니다.

집에 가져갈 조개를 직접 캔다는 생각 때문인지 지치지도 않고 열심히 찾습니다.

이런 체험은 그냥 구경하는 여행과 확실히 다릅니다.

직접 몸을 움직이니까 여행의 기억도 훨씬 선명하게 남습니다.

 

 

8. 트랙터가 계속 사람들을 실어 나릅니다

갯벌에서 체험하는 동안에도 트랙터는 계속 움직입니다.

체험을 마치고 돌아가는 사람들을 태우고, 새롭게 체험하러 오는 사람들을 다시 갯벌로 데려갑니다.

멀리서 보면 트랙터와 사람들이 갯벌을 오가는 모습 자체가 하나의 풍경입니다.

특히 넓게 펼쳐진 갯벌 위에 트랙터가 움직이는 모습을 사진으로 담으니 선재도 바지락 축제만의 분위기가 잘 살아납니다.

 

 

9. 캐온 조개를 집으로 가져가는 재미

직접 캔 동죽과 바지락은 그냥 두고 오는 것이 아닙니다.

열심히 캔 만큼 집으로 가져갑니다.

아이들에게는 이것도 꽤 특별한 경험입니다.

“이거 내가 캔 거야.”

하면서 집에 가져가 가족들과 함께 먹을 수 있으니까요.

단순히 축제를 구경하고 기념품 하나 사 오는 것보다 직접 캔 조개를 가져간다는 것이 훨씬 기억에 남을 것 같습니다.

 

 

10. 바지락만 있는 축제가 아니었습니다

갯벌체험 외에도 축제장에서는 바지락 먹거리와 지역 먹거리를 만날 수 있었고, 오후에는 공연과 주민 참여 프로그램도 이어졌습니다. 공식 행사 안내에서도 바지락 캐기·바지락 담기 체험과 먹거리, 공연 및 주민 참여 프로그램을 주요 프로그램으로 소개하고 있습니다.그래서 하루 종일 갯벌에서 조개만 캐는 일정이라기보다 가족들이 함께 체험하고 먹고 구경할 수 있는 축제에 가깝습니다.

 

 

11. 인천 가족여행으로 선재도가 좋았던 이유

이번 여행을 하면서 느낀 것은 가족여행에는 이런 체험 하나쯤 들어가면 좋겠다는 것입니다.

그냥 예쁜 풍경을 보고 사진을 찍는 것도 좋지만,

트랙터를 타고 갯벌로 들어가고,

호미로 조개를 찾고,

아이들과 함께 누가 많이 캤는지 이야기하고,

직접 캔 조개를 집으로 가져가는 것.

이런 과정이 있으니 하루가 훨씬 재미있습니다.

특히 아이들과 함께 온 가족이라면 아이들이 스마트폰을 내려놓고 갯벌에서 직접 무언가를 찾아보는 시간이 된다는 것도 좋겠습니다.

 

 

12. 선재도 바지락 페스티벌, 시간 가는 줄 몰랐습니다

사실 출발할 때만 해도 바지락 몇 개 캐고 축제장 조금 둘러보다 돌아올 생각이었습니다.

그런데 갯벌에 들어가니 생각이 달라졌습니다.

“여기 한 번만 더 파보자.”

“조금만 더 캐고 가자.”

하다 보니 시간이 훌쩍 지나갔습니다.

아이들도 열심히 캐고, 어른들도 열심히 캐고.

결국 모두가 갯벌에 앉아 조개 찾기에 빠져버렸습니다.

이래서 체험여행이 재미있는가 봅니다.

구경만 하고 돌아온 여행보다 직접 손을 움직이고 몸을 움직인 여행이 훨씬 오래 기억에 남습니다.

 

 

 

처음 열린 선재도 바지락 페스티벌에서 바다만 본 것이 아니라 선재도의 갯벌을 직접 만나고, 가족들과 함께 조개를 캐며 제대로 하루를 즐기고 왔습니다.

이번에는 바지락을 캤으니 다음에 선재도에 오면 또 어떤 재미있는 일이 기다리고 있을지 궁금합니다.

"Going to dig for Manila clams myself?" At first, I didn't think much of it. But when I arrived at the Seonjaedo Manila Clam Festival, I found a much larger crowd than I had expected. What really stood out were the families out for an outing with their children. The kids looked excited as they waited for the tidal flat experience, and before long, the adults—each armed with a hand rake—were just as serious about finding clams. In the end, I found myself digging through the mudflats, completely losing track of time.

 

1. The 1st Seonjaedo Manila Clam Festival The event held this time was the "1st Seonjaedo Manila Clam Festival." It was the inaugural festival, held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM around the Seonjaedo Tourist Information Center and the public parking lot. Leveraging Seonjaedo’s signature local specialty—Manila clams—and its tidal flats as tourism attractions, the festival featured activities like clam digging and gathering, direct sales by the local fishing cooperative, clam-based food, performances, and programs involving local residents. It was, quite literally, Viewing the sea → Walking the tidal flats → Digging for clams → Enjoying the food → Watching performances ...a unique autumn festival that only Seonjaedo can offer.

 

2. There were so many families visiting with their children The first thing that caught my eye upon arrival was the number of family visitors. There were so many parents holding their children's hands. The children were already buzzing with excitement while waiting for the tidal flat experience, while the adults were busy getting their rain boots and gloves ready. At first, I assumed it was an activity mainly for the kids, but once it started, the adults proved to be just as competitive. "I heard the clams are better over there." Once word gets out, the adults also join in on the serious hunt for Manila clams.

 

 

3. Riding a tractor out onto the exposed mudflat One surprisingly fun part of this experience was the tractor ride. Instead of walking all the way to the mudflat, you travel there by tractor. Tractors shuttle participants back and forth, taking them to the specific area of ​​the mudflat where the clam digging happens. Climbing aboard the tractor gives you a brief thrill, almost like riding an amusement park attraction. Above all, the sight of the tractor heading out across the vast, exposed mudflat is a scene rarely encountered on typical trips. If you have a camera with you, it’s definitely a moment worth capturing.

 

 

 

4. Participation fee: 12,000 KRW per person; boots: 2,000 KRW The cost for the experience I participated in was 12,000 KRW per person. You head out to the mudflat equipped with a hand hoe, gloves, and a small bucket for the clams. If you don't have boots, you can rent a pair for 2,000 KRW. Past information on mudflat experiences at Seonjaedo also indicates that boot rentals were handled separately from the admission fee. Since you have to step onto the mudflat, it’s best to consider boots an absolute necessity. As for clothing, it’s better to wear something you don't mind getting muddy, rather than your best clothes.

 

 

5. Different clams appear depending on the specific spot within the mudflat This was another interesting aspect. You wouldn't necessarily find the same type of clam just by digging anywhere at random. The clams you found varied slightly depending on the location. The clams I encountered during the experience were *dongjuk* (surf clams) and *bajirak* (Manila clams). You gently scrape the mudflat with your hand hoe, and whenever a clam appears, you pop it straight into your bucket. At first, finding just one or two feels amazing, and you might stop to take a photo. But as you start finding more... Once you start, the whole scene changes. Taking photos comes later; for now, it’s all about digging.

 

 

6. On the mudflat, children and adults are just the same. It is truly adorable to see children diligently digging for clams. But if you watch closely, adults aren't much different from the kids. When they spot a clam, “Here it is!” ...and enjoy the process. If someone finds a particularly large haul, they might let the person next to them know; before long, a subtle competition over who has dug up the most begins. Under normal circumstances, there’s little reason to venture out onto the mudflats, but sitting there with a *homi* (hand trowel) in hand makes you feel like a child again.

 

7. Time flies when you’re having fun hunting for clams At first, I thought, "An hour or so should be enough." But once I actually stepped onto the mudflats, my perspective changed completely. Dig a little, and a clam appears; take a few steps to the side, and there’s another one. "Just a few more before I leave." One thing leads to another, and you just keep going. It’s the same for the children. Perhaps because they know they get to take their catch home, they search diligently without ever seeming to tire. This kind of hands-on activity is distinctly different from a trip where you simply look at the sights. Because you are physically active, the memories of the trip remain much more vivid.

 

 

8. Tractors keep ferrying people back and forth The tractors keep moving throughout the experience. They transport people back after they’ve finished and carry new participants out to the mudflats. From a distance, the sight of tractors and people moving across the mudflats creates a picturesque scene in itself. Capturing the tractors moving across the vast expanse of mudflats in a photo really brings out the unique atmosphere of the Seonjaedo Clam Festival.

 

9. The joy of taking your catch home You don’t leave behind the *dongjuk* (marsh clams) and manila clams you’ve dug up. You get to take home everything you’ve worked hard to harvest. For children, this is a truly special experience. "I dug this up myself." ...because you can take them home and enjoy them with your family. Bringing home clams you dug up yourself feels far more memorable than simply looking around the festival and buying a souvenir.

 

10. It wasn't just about the clams Beyond the tidal flat experience, the festival offered a variety of dishes featuring local clams and other regional specialties, followed by afternoon performances and programs involving local residents. The official event schedule highlights clam digging and gathering activities, food options, performances, and resident-participation programs as key attractions. So, rather than an itinerary spent solely digging for clams on the mudflats all day, it is more of a festival where families can enjoy hands-on activities, good food, and sightseeing together.

 

 

11. Why Seonjaedo was a great choice for a family trip to Incheon What I realized during this trip is that including an activity like this makes a family vacation even better. While simply admiring beautiful scenery and taking photos is nice, riding a tractor out onto the mudflats, searching for clams with a hand hoe, competing with the kids to see who can dig up the most, and taking the clams you harvested home— these experiences make the day so much more fun. For families visiting with children, it’s especially great to see the kids put down their smartphones and spend time actively searching for things on the mudflats.

 

12. Seonjaedo Clam Festival: Time flew by To be honest, when I first set out, I only planned to dig up a few clams, take a quick look around the festival, and head back. But once I stepped onto the mudflats, my mindset changed. "Let's try digging right here one more time." "Let's dig just a little bit more before we go." Before I knew it, the time had flown by. Both the children and the adults were hard at work digging. In the end, everyone was sitting on the mudflat, completely engrossed in searching for clams. I suppose that is what makes hands-on travel experiences so enjoyable.

 

A trip where you actively use your hands and body stays in your memory far longer than one where you simply look around. At the inaugural Seonjaedo Clam Festival, I didn't just gaze at the sea; I experienced the mudflats firsthand and enjoyed a wonderful day digging for clams with my family. Having dug for clams this time, I find myself wondering what kind of fun activities might await me on my next visit to Seonjaedo.
