Hey, did you go to Shirakawago in Nagoya, Japan this winter? It was such a dreamlike trip! Since you like traveling to Japan too, it must have been perfect for you.

First, I started in Nagoya. Nagoya is a fairly large city in Japan, so there were a lot of things to see and eat. First, I went to Nagoya Castle🏯. Maybe because it was winter, the sky was clear and clean, so the castle was really beautiful, and the exhibits inside the castle were interesting. And I avoided the ninjas roaming around the castle.

But the highlight of this trip was definitely Shirakawago. It takes about 3 hours by bus from Nagoya to get there, and the snowy scenery was so pretty on the way there that it was fun to look out the window.

Shirakawago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it really is a picturesque town! The traditional Gassho-zukuri (thatched roof) houses blend in well with the snow-covered landscape, making it feel like a town in a fairy tale. Shirakawago looked like the Smurf Village in the cartoon from afar.

The reason why the houses have a unique structure is because when there is a lot of snow or rain, the ground is often wet, so people can't live on the first floor, so they empty it and use it as a garage or storage, and people usually live on the second floor.

Also, the straw that covers the roof rots, so it has to be replaced every few years, and this is a big event in this town.

While walking around the town, I took 📷 pictures and had a cup of warm 🍵 green tea at a small cafe, and it felt like my body was melting.

There were many places to visit in Shirakawa-go. First of all, the most famous "Ogimachi Observatory" is said to overlook the entire town, but I couldn't go. I could have taken a shuttle bus or walked up there, but I didn't have enough time. Also, the "Wada Family Residence" is a traditional house that has been around since ancient times, and I was able to get a glimpse of its history and lifestyle by looking around the inside.

"Myozenji Temple" was also quiet and charming, so it was nice to walk around, and the "Shirakawa-go Roadside Station" where you can buy souvenirs made by traditional craftsmen was also interesting.

The scenery of the snow-covered triangular roof houses crowded together was really exotic.

Also, I was able to go inside a traditional house, and it was really interesting to see how Japanese people lived in the past. The inside was warmer and more cozy than I thought, and there was a fireplace-like brazier, so I think it was possible to stay warm in the old way. Actually, I only took a quick look inside and didn't go in. They all charge an entrance fee.

This trip was a trip where I really felt the winter vibe. Shirakawa-go is a place you must visit in the winter, and Nagoya is a more attractive city than I thought, so it exceeded my expectations. If you're thinking of traveling to Japan in the winter, go to Shirakawa-go! You really won't regret it.
